Happenings

  • I got back from my holiday yesterday, and I’ll have more to say about that tomorrow.
  • Today was a really nice day.
    • I went out for coffee and breakfast with a friend who now lives in Italy but was in the area visiting family.
    • Then my dad surprised me by setting us up to go for a walk with our former dog this afternoon. We had him for 9 years. Then we had a kid, and he didn’t cope with the change, so we rehomed him to a very good home with someone my parents could vouch for. We hadn’t seen him for four years, but we took him for a walk around the cemetery. For a now 14+ year old dog, he’s doing very well. Stone deaf,[1] but otherwise in very good health — still active, healthy joints, and so on. And it was so wonderful to hear his new owners affectionately talk about his little ways and habits we knew so well. To be able to walk with him, and even let our eldest son walk him, was a real joy.

Links

This one will be Blaugust links:

  • Morrowind Review from Alex’s Review Corner. I love this game, and thanks to OpenMW, I can install my Windows copy of the game on Linux, and even my retro handheld.
  • Fight Further, a post about Final Fantasy VII, which I’m currently watching my father play through (albeit rather slowly). We haven’t got to “it” yet.
  • Linkdump 119 from 82MHz. I always check out Andreas’s linkdumps; mainly because I nearly always find an app I’ve been looking for. This time it was FUTO keyboard, an Android keyboard app. I used to use Minuum, but that seems to be no more, so I’ve been stuck on Gboard for a while looking for an alternative. FUTO is the best alternative I’ve found so far.
  • Five Interesting Indie Platforms, from Brennan. Some of these look really cool. Another Indie platform I like is the indie social media app Cyberspace (I can’t remember where I found this; it could have been Andreas (?)).
  • 5 things we’re doing wrong in EdTech from Academic Aesthetic. This blog is a new Blaugust follow for me, and I’ve been really enjoying it.
  • Lazybear’s Blaugust intro post. Hey, Blaugustians, Hyde isn’t on the Discord or on the “official” participants lists because of his principled opposition to Discord and Google forms. So, give his blog a follow if you missed it. I did see some chat about having a proper Blaugust website, which might mean we don’t need to use Google forms in future? We’ll see.
  • Fyr’s Blaugust intro post. Like me, Fyr is using Blaugust as a path to rekindling his sleepy blog.

Reading

This week, I’ve made good progress on The Odyssey (you might have heard of it). Determined to finish it before I see the movie.

Playing

Not a ton this week due to holiday. A bit of progress on Terranigma, as well as trying out a couple of Pico-8 games for the first time. I enjoyed Moss Moss, which you can play for free on the web in the link (it was more fun on handheld though).

  1. One of his new owners plays the double bass, and he still get pleasure from lying near the bass and feeling the vibrations. ↩︎
