I’ve not websited much recently. I guess I’ve just had a lot on. I have a few WIP posts though.

Happenings

(I missed last week so this is two weeks’ worth)

  • Youngest child’s diarrhoea lasted most of the week. But he got better, as they do.
  • I screwed up at work. A child was being, well, whiny and entitled, and as I was already dealing with a lot of poor behaviour that lesson, I lost my cool and told her to stop acting like a baby. The next day she didn’t want to come to my lesson, and I felt dreadful for having spoken to her like that. My manager said it was fine and we all have moments like that where the stress gets to us, and I shouldn’t worry about it too much. But I did. Lost a lot of sleep. The following day I went into work on my day off to speak to her one-on-one and apologise.
  • My wife and I went to a concert for the first time since before COVID, as there was COVID, and then we had two children. It was mary and the junkyard (link to a live song), and it was great. The venue had actually moved, arrived at the wrong venue and were very confused, then had to drive a couple of miles to find the actual venue. It was a great gig, excellent band, so many interesting sounds and techniques.
  • It was open evening at school, so that was 12 hours at work.
  • Then my littlest spiked a temperature of 39.6°C overnight, so we had the joys of working around a child with a fever for a couple of days.
  • I had a poem published in tsuri-dōrō. This is one of the most popular free online journals for haiku, and it is my first publication where I’m not personally friends with the editor ;). If you’re browsing on mobile, switch to landscape or the linebreaks screw up.
  • Then today we went to a local arboretum. It was lovely, as always, but wasn’t quite as autumnal as I was hoping. Most of the leaves were still green. I guess we’ll just have to go again soon.

Playing

Mostly Nier: Automata. I’m still in the first playthrough — in this game, to understand the full narrative you have to play it 5 times, though subsequent plays are significantly different (and thankfully shorter) than the first.

Reading

This week my friend and I did a call to discuss book 6 of Nicomachean Ethics, but we only ended up getting half-way through as there is a lot in this book. It’s the book about the intellectual virtues, or virtues of the soul: technē (skill), epistēmē (“scientific” knowledge), nous (intellect — the ability to intuit principles that can’t be logically deduced), phronêsis (practical wisdom), and sophia (philosophical wisdom). There are various subtypes of these too, such as judgement, which is a kind of ethical wisdom. As is often the case, the conversation occasionally got on to what effect AI will have on this stuff.

I’m also still reading The Left Hand Of Darkness. It’s cool (no pun intended).
